Moving around

The PANEL button

Opens the full dashboard: category filters, watch zones, activity trends, and the live data source status list. It's the control center for everything else on this page.

Category filters

Each chip (Wildfire, Quake, Volcano, etc.) toggles that event type on or off across the whole globe. Turning all of them off is allowed, but nothing will be visible until at least one is back on — the globe will tell you if that happens.

Spotting what's new

Anything from the last 24 hours draws an outward-travelling ring, like a radar return, and carries a NEW 24H tag in its detail card. That motion is deliberately different from the breathing ring on high-severity events, so a big old event and a small fresh one never look alike — and something that's both reads as both.

The counter above the globe splits the same way: active is everything the feeds currently list, new in 24h is the slice that changed today. Tick Last 24h only in the panel to hide the rest. It's off by default, because much of what these feeds carry is genuinely still happening.

Watch zones

By default, the bell icon alerts you to every new event, everywhere. Adding a watch zone narrows that down: pick a location from the dropdown (or tap "Use My Location"), choose a radius, and only new events inside that radius will trigger an alert. You can add as many zones as you like, and remove any of them with the ✕ next to its name.

Shows a running log of new events as they're detected, newest first, filtered by your watch zones if you've set any. Tap any entry to jump the globe straight to it. "Clear Log" empties the list without affecting your watch zones or anything else.

Battery saver

The battery-saver button beside the reset control cycles through Auto, Always on, and Off. It lights green whenever saving is actually active, and its tooltip says why.

On Auto it switches itself on when your battery drops below 25% and isn't charging, when your system asks apps to reduce motion, when the browser is capping animation the way iOS does in Low Power Mode, or when the device is clearly struggling.

It never throttles anything you're steering. Dragging, pinching, a flick still coasting, and the fly-in when you jump to a country all run at full speed regardless. Saving only touches ambient motion — the idle spin, which turns roughly 1.6° per second and looks identical at half the frame rate — and it slows how often the data feeds are polled, which is where most of the battery actually goes on a phone. Resolution, glow, bloom and pin count are untouched, so the picture never gets worse.

Auto-spin

The globe slowly rotates on its own when you're not interacting with it. Toggle it off, or adjust its speed, from inside the PANEL.

A note on timing

"Occurred" on an event card is when it actually happened, according to the source agency. "Detected" is when this app first noticed it. They're usually close, but not identical — network delays and each agency's own reporting speed both play a part.

Mappitaz is a live globe that plots publicly reported earthquakes, wildfires, storms, volcanic activity, floods, tsunamis, extreme heat, air-quality alerts, meteor fireballs and space-weather events as they're published by government monitoring agencies.

Data comes directly from public feeds — nothing here is generated, predicted, or edited by this site:

Map data

The coastlines, the country borders, and the anchor points the country names are drawn at all come from Natural Earth — a public-domain cartographic dataset built and maintained by the volunteer cartographic community. Natural Earth asks for no attribution; it's credited here because the project deserves it.

Country names are label anchors placed at each country's visual centre, not at its capital, and only countries large enough to carry a readable label at the current zoom are drawn.

About the borders

Borders are drawn in two styles, and the difference is not decorative:

The classification is Natural Earth's, taken directly from its FEATURECLA field and not re-judged here. Drawing every line the same way would have this site quietly assert that all of them are agreed, which is untrue and not ours to assert.

No line on this globe endorses any territorial claim, and none of it has legal standing. Where a boundary is contested, the dashed line marks the disagreement rather than picking a side. Borders can be switched off entirely in the panel.

What "new" means

Events from the last 24 hours get a pulsing ring and a NEW 24H tag. Where an agency publishes a real event time — USGS quake origin times, NASA EONET geometry dates, NOAA alert onset times — that's the clock being used, and the detail card shows it as Occurred.

The remaining feeds (GDACS, NOAA NHC, JPL CNEOS, NOAA SWPC) don't publish a per-event origin time in the fields read here, so for those "new" can only mean first seen by this browser, shown as Detected. The two are kept separate on purpose: a first-seen timestamp is a fact about your device, not about the world, and presenting it as an event time would be misleading.

Ongoing hazards stay fully visible whether or not they're recent. A wildfire that's been burning for three weeks is still burning, and dimming it to make today's events stand out would misrepresent what's happening on the ground.

It's built as a situational-awareness visualization, not an emergency alerting system. Positions, timing and severity are only as accurate and as current as the upstream agency feed, and outages or delays in those feeds can mean the globe temporarily under-represents what's actually happening.

This page lays out exactly what Mappitaz does and doesn't do with visitor data. It's written in plain language, not legal boilerplate — if anything here is unclear, that's on us to fix, not you to decode.

What this site itself collects

Nothing, on any server. There's no account system, no sign-up form, and no database that stores information about you. A small amount of data is saved only in your own browser (via localStorage), and never transmitted anywhere:

You can erase all of this at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser's settings — there's nothing left over on our end to delete, because it was never sent to us.

Location

Mappitaz only requests your location if you tap "Use My Location" to center a watch zone, which triggers your browser's own permission prompt. The coordinate is used solely on your device to draw that zone and is never sent to any server. You can deny or revoke this permission at any time in your browser or device settings.

Hosting & analytics

This site is served through Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes visitors' IP addresses to deliver pages and provide basic security (for example, mitigating attacks) — this is a standard, necessary part of operating any website, in the EU or the US.

We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, a cookie-free, aggregated real-user-measurement tool, to see approximate visit counts and page performance. It does not set tracking cookies, build advertising profiles, or identify individuals across other sites.

Third-party data feeds

The live event data itself is fetched directly by your browser from USGS, NASA (EONET/JPL), NOAA, and GDACS when the page loads — not routed through our servers. That means your device connects to those agencies' systems directly, so their own privacy practices apply to those specific requests; we don't control or see that traffic.

Your rights (GDPR & CCPA)

We don't sell personal information, run advertising trackers, or share data with data brokers — there's simply nothing like that here to opt out of. Because no personal data is stored on any server we control, access and deletion requests are effectively already satisfied by clearing your browser's local site data and location permission, at any time, without needing to contact anyone.

This site isn't directed at children and doesn't knowingly collect data from them — mainly because it doesn't knowingly collect data from anyone.

What this site is

Mappitaz is a free visual tool that plots publicly reported hazard data on an interactive globe. It's provided "as is," for situational awareness and general interest — not as an emergency alerting system, and not as a substitute for official sources. See the About page for what that means in practice.

Map data

Coastline geometry, border lines and country label positions are derived from Natural Earth, which is in the public domain. Country names and borders are shown for orientation only and carry no legal weight. Boundaries that Natural Earth classifies as disputed, provisional or lines of control are drawn dashed to mark them as contested; nothing on this site represents a position on any territorial dispute, and no line here should be relied on for any legal, navigational or administrative purpose.

Ownership of this site's code and design

The code, visual design, and branding of Mappitaz — including its layout, styling, and the way it renders and animates data — are the original work of its creator and are protected by copyright. Viewing this page in a browser (and the ability to inspect its source, which any website allows) does not grant permission to copy, redistribute, rehost, or create derivative works from this site, in whole or in part, without prior written permission.

You're welcome to link to Mappitaz, reference it, or write about it — reusing the underlying code or design itself is what requires permission.

The data itself isn't ours to license

The hazard data displayed here is fetched directly from public government and international agencies — USGS, NASA (EONET/JPL CNEOS), NOAA, and GDACS. That data belongs to those agencies, not to Mappitaz, and is used here under each agency's own open-data terms (U.S. federal sources are public domain; GDACS is used under its Creative Commons Attribution license). Mappitaz doesn't claim ownership over the underlying data, only over the way it's aggregated, normalized, and visualized here.

No warranty

Mappitaz is provided without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Data is only as accurate, complete, and current as the upstream agency feeds it depends on — outages, delays, or errors in those feeds can cause the globe to be incomplete or temporarily wrong, and this site doesn't independently verify anything it displays.

Limitation of liability

Mappitaz and its creator aren't liable for decisions made based on information shown here, or for any damages arising from use of, or inability to use, this site. For anything time-critical — evacuation orders, active storm tracking, official warnings — always rely on your local emergency services, national weather service, or news outlets, not this site.

Changes

These terms may be updated as the site evolves. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms. Material changes will be reflected here with a new build version.
